France has over 700 active sectoral collective agreements governing wages, a 35-hour legal working week with overtime premiums baked in by law, and a national minimum wage that is updated at least annually β to which three million employees are currently pinned. Australia has a minimum wage reviewed annually by an independent tribunal, over 120 industry-specific "modern awards" covering minimum pay by occupation, and enterprise bargaining agreements negotiated company by company. Both systems deploy the word "collective" with some frequency. The experience of working inside them is, however, substantially different β in ways that matter to anyone weighing which country to take a salary in, negotiate a salary in, or politely refuse to discuss a salary in.
The French salary system is structured from the top down. The national SMIC β currently β¬1,867.02 gross monthly as of June 2026, netting to approximately β¬1,477 after social contributions β establishes the absolute floor, above which over 700 sectoral conventions collectives de branche impose their own higher minimums by industry. In consulting, technology, and financial services, collective agreement minimums for qualified roles routinely exceed the SMIC from the moment of hiring. The system's intention is unambiguous: wages in any industry cannot be undercut below a collectively agreed threshold, regardless of what any individual employer might prefer.
Above this floor, individual salaries are negotiated β but within a cultural context that Anglophone expats consistently describe as startling. Salary discussions in French corporate life are private, formal, and approached with what one might charitably call discretion, or less charitably call opacity. Asking a colleague what they earn is roughly equivalent to asking their weight: technically answerable, socially inadvisable. This norm coexists, somewhat uncomfortably, with France's implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive, which is gradually introducing salary disclosure rights that the culture has not yet fully accommodated. A 2024 survey by HelloWork found that 54% of French workers were now comfortable discussing pay at work β up from 17% in 2019 β which suggests the taboo is cracking, just not gone.
The 35-hour working week, enshrined since 2000, shapes compensation in ways that are frequently misunderstood. It does not mean French workers clock off at 35 hours; it means that hours beyond 35 attract overtime premiums of 10β25%, depending on the applicable sectoral agreement. Many professional employees work more and receive time-off in lieu or additional pay. The structural effect, however, is that the cost of overwork is visible, accounted for, and priced into employment in France β which is not universally true elsewhere.
Australia's approach to wages is less architecturally elaborate and, in certain respects, more refreshingly direct. The national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour (effective July 1, 2026, after the Fair Work Commission's 4.75% increase) is reviewed annually by an independent body that weighs inflation, economic conditions, and the needs of low-paid workers. Over 120 modern awards then set industry- and occupation-specific floors above this national minimum. Enterprise bargaining agreements, negotiated at the company level, must pass a "Better Off Overall Test" ensuring no worker is worse off under an EBA than under their applicable award. The result is a layered system: national floor, industry floor, company-level agreement, individual contract β each providing a different tier of protection.
The cultural register of salary in Australia is markedly more open than in France. Australia scores 90 on Hofstede's Individualism scale and 51 on Uncertainty Avoidance, meaning individual negotiation is normalized and pay transparency is no longer just tolerated β it's legally protected. Since June 2023, pay secrecy clauses in new contracts have been unenforceable. Workers can now freely disclose or discuss their remuneration without fear of reprisal. "What are you on?" is a reasonable workplace question in Australia in a way that "Combien vous gagnez?" simply is not in France. Australia's average gross full-time weekly earnings reached AUD 2,051.10 in late 2025 β annualizing to roughly AUD 106,657 β and the country ranks 8th globally for net monthly salary.

The tradeoff is a labor market that moves slowly: hiring is considered and deliberate, redundancy is expensive, and employers navigate a regulatory landscape that can deter the kind of rapid workforce scaling that Australian companies manage with relative ease.
Australia's system is more flexible, with faster hiring and termination processes, more individual variation in pay outcomes, and greater dependence on market conditions to determine what workers actually earn. One expat who had worked in both countries noted online that Australia felt like salary was something you negotiated in real time β competitive, transparent, responsive to the market β while France felt like salary was something the system had already largely decided, and you were merely confirming the number that the collective agreement and your employer had pre-arranged between them.
The Local France β "I would feel ashamed to tell someone how much money I make, especially if it is less than them," said Alexia, a Parisian salesperson. "Some people are afraid to negotiate their salary and might end up earning less than colleagues doing the same job. This is mainly why I would not talk about money at work."
The Local France β "I don't mind telling someone how much I make, I know it is not much, but we all have money issues," said Etan, in his twenties. His parents, he added, would never discuss theirs β a generational fault line running straight through the salary taboo.

The consensus: yes, comfortably above average β but the actual number that lands in your account each month will be meaningfully lower than you expect. Factor in social charges, income tax at source, and the fact that French salaries are always quoted brut.

Australia has built a system designed to let market conditions and individual negotiation establish outcomes, with a floor that is itself among the world's highest. Both approaches are internally coherent. The French version offers security that can feel, to outsiders, like inflexibility. The Australian version offers opportunity that can feel, to insiders, like uncertainty.
What both countries share is the eventual discovery that floors and frameworks, however well-engineered, do not by themselves produce the feeling of being adequately compensated. That turns out to be a relative concern β one determined by what your colleagues earn, what you suspect they earn, and how much of that information anyone is actually willing to share. On that last point, France and Australia have arrived at opposite conclusions, and neither seems particularly close to reconsidering.
